Just a reminder to readers who may be concerned about the measles outbreak in Auckland that there is a comprehensive article on this website that has information about treatments for measles as well as the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. (This vaccine is free in New Zealand for eligible people.)

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Please note that if you believe that you have been exposed to the measles and think that you are not immune, it is prudent to stay at home during the period in which you are likely to be infectious so that you do not inadvertently spread the virus to people for whom the infection can be dangerous. (NB: If you have been exposed to measles and you live with people who are immunocompromised and/or may be at higher risk of complications from measles, such as babies, particularly those whose mothers may have been vaccinated rather than having had a natural measles infection or babies that are not breastfeeding, please seek the advice of a health professional.)

If you are ill with measles and need to consult a health professional please call ahead of your visit to the clinic or hospital so that arrangements can be made to minimise the risk of your passing along the virus to other patients who may be vulnerable to complications.
