Introducing Issue 57 of The NZ Journal of Natural Medicine

Our cover story for issue 57 is “Is this the cancer treatment breakthrough we’ve all been hoping for?” discusses the discovery of combining cheap, repurposed pharmaceutical drugs with intravenous vitamin C, a ketogenic diet and nutritional supplements provides a new option for patients who would otherwise have a poor prognosis.

A major mental health story in this issue describes how ketogenic diets (and also those that are not necessarily ketogenic but are lower in carbohydrates) can also help people who are experiencing mental health challenges.

Also in issue 57 is an article about how fungal infections may play a role in degenerative diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s disease.  A related article, in our Men’s Health section discusses how fungal infections of the prostate may be an underappreciated cause of prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate).

The nutrition section in this issue includes a feature story on butter and how the unique fats from in this traditional dairy food can support good health throughout one’s lifespan.

The high rate of asthma in NZ children has long been a concern.  Issue 57 discusses how zinc deficiency has been shown to be associated with more serious asthma (and allergic rhinitis) and includes information about foods that provide useful levels of this vital trace mineral.

Also relating to children’s health, this issue has an important article about the potential harms of prenatal ultrasound – and also how a homoeopathic remedy prepared from water exposed to ultrasound may be used to treat some children who have ADHD type symptoms, especially severe restlessness.

This is just a taste of what’s in issue 57 of The NZ Journal of Natural Medicine.

It’s our pleasure to serve.

Wishing you the best of health!

– Katherine Smith and Jonathan Eisen, Editors
